Raven - The Light Beyond Seeing

At first glance, Raven appears black. But look more closely, and another story begins to emerge.

This Dream Weaver explores the mystery of perception—the understanding that what we see is not always the whole truth. Raven is painted with subtle rainbow undertones of blue, violet, and green, reflecting the iridescent colors that can exist within his seemingly black feathers. His wings curve upward as he flies toward a radiant, gold-foiled sun painted upon buffalo hide: a moment of transformation, sacrifice, and the bringing of light into the world.

In Coast Salish traditions, Raven is a powerful trickster, helper, and bringer of light. There are many versions of Raven stories across Northwest Coast Nations, with details varying between communities. In one Coast Salish telling, the world existed in darkness because the sun was hidden away. Raven took the sun and flew toward the sky, carrying its light to the people. As he flew into the sun, the intense heat scorched his feathers black. Raven, who had once carried the colors of the rainbow, became the dark-feathered bird we know today.

His transformation became part of the price of bringing light into the world.

There is a beautiful parallel between this story and the natural world. Raven's feathers may appear black to our eyes, yet their structure can produce subtle flashes of blue, violet, green, and other colors as light moves across them. There are also wavelengths of light beyond the spectrum human eyes can perceive, including ultraviolet. Those unseen colors are represented here through the rainbow undertones painted into Raven's feathers.

The colors are there, even when they aren't immediately visible.

Crystal Grid

The 11-sided crystal grid represents a threshold between the known and the unknown. Eleven carries associations with intuition, illumination, awakening, and transformation—the moment when something hidden begins to come into awareness.

The crystals:

  • Rainbow Obsidian — hidden beauty emerging from darkness; a reminder that what appears black may hold unexpected color, depth, and light.

  • Chrome Diopside — growth, awakening, and the vibrant living energy that emerges when we begin to see the natural world differently.

  • Amethyst — intuition, spiritual perception, and the ability to sense what exists beyond the immediately visible.

  • Dumortierite — clarity, discernment, and trusting the deeper knowing that develops when we learn to perceive differently.

Together, these stones create a movement from hidden potential toward awakened perception. Rainbow Obsidian begins in the darkness, holding color within what appears black. Chrome Diopside brings the energy of awakening and growth. Amethyst opens the intuitive senses, while Dumortierite helps bring clarity and discernment to what has been revealed.

Here, it reflects Raven's flight toward the sun: the crossing from darkness into light, from what is known into what is waiting to be discovered.

The gold-foiled sun represents the light Raven sought to bring into the world, while the buffalo hide beneath him provides an earthly foundation for his journey. Together, Raven and the sun hold a story of sacrifice and transformation, but also one of perception.
